A Sweet New Year

This evening at sundown marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. For the next few days, I will be celebrating with my family, observing traditions and eating copious amounts of food. (Okay so that part isn’t different from any other day.)

During this period of time, I choose to turn off all technology and take a break from my cell phone, computer, and the ease of turning on the TV or music for background noise and entertainment. It may sound extreme, but it’s something I’ve been doing for as long as I can remember, and in some ways I actually look forward to it.

I encourage myself to pay attention to more important things in life, conversing with the people in front of me rather than with friends over a text, reading a book instead of an e-mail, sharing stories instead of Facebook statuses, and savoring my meals vs. blogging about them. It’s a nice break from my own daily addiction to these outside sources, and a wonderful opportunity to reflect on my life and spend quality time with family and friends.

I will be sure to report back when I turn my computer back on, and will share recipes such as my annual apples and honey panini! Until then, I wish all those observing a happy, healthy and sweet new year, and I wish everyone else a happy, healthy and sweet few days!

That’s SO Jenn will return on Wednesday!
